1.What is my workplace called, and what does it do?
My internship is called the Youth Enrichment Program also known as Y.E.P. this program gives students a place to go after school where they can do homework, participate in activites and socialize with other children.
2.Is it a small business, a medium sized business, or a large corporation?
For the school being so big and based on the amount of students that attend Y.E.P I would have to say that it's a small business.
3.Where is my workplace located and what does it look like
My workplace is located in Hayward at a local middle school. The school is very big and about 300 hundred students attend there.
4.How many people work there?
There's about 30-35 staff member but Y.E.P only has about 5 staff members.
5.What sorts of people does my workplace employ?
My workplace employs people of all different races, ethnicity and genders.
6.Do most of the people there have a 4-year college degree, 2-year college degree, or technical certificate?
I don't know for sure what everybody employed there has but if they're working at a school as a teacher or administrator I'm pretty sure that they have some type of college degree but as far as the Y.E.P staff I know that the leaders are currently attending college and I know my mentor has as well.
7.Who does my workplace serve?
My workplace serves the students that attend and they also help out with the sports programs that they have at the school with giving them their extra snack or water.
8.What are the strengths of my workplace?
Some strengths of my workplace are that they help out with their students as much as possible and they try to teach them real life situations through the activities that they do with them.
9.What are the weaknesses of my workplace?
A weakness is that the leaders have a hard time trying to direct the students and it's hard trying to always get the students to calm down and get through whatever it is that they need to get through for that day.

My mentors name is Karen Bryers and she's the site coordinator at the school that they run their Y.E.P program at.
2.What is their typical day (or week) like?
Arrive at the school and then do what needs to be done around the classroom until students get let out of school and once signed into program and are put into their assigned groups continues to work.
3.How did they become interested in this field and what skills/education background did they need?
My mentor liked working with children and being a single mother wanted her children to be able to be in programs where they would be able to interact with other children.

1.What is my main responsibility? What is my “title”?
My main resposibilities are to do what ever it is my mentor needs me to do for that day. And that could be anything from organizing the cabinets, filing papers, running errends to classrooms, putting new information on the bullitin board, making posters, cleaning up the classroom and even handing out snack to the students. I wouldn't say that I have a specific title.
2.What other types of tasks am I completing each week?
My tasks each week are about the same, there's no major change in what I do each week that I'm there.
3.What is a regular day like? Describe it from start to finish.  Use examples and tell stories.
A regular day for me would be to get to the school around 11:45, go to the main office to get a visitors pass, go to the Y.E.P room and let Ms.Karen know arrived, afterwards she'd let me know what I'd be working on that day and throughout the day she'd give me all different types of tasks she needs me to complete for her.

1.Describe what I am thinking I’ll do for my WLE project.
At first I was thinking about doing my project on recycling but now that I looked at other choices I've decided to do a science project based off of diabetes.
2.How did I come up with this idea?  Explain my thinking.
I came up with this idea by looking through a science project book that my mentor gave me and because it was based on diabetes it caught my attention because diabetes has had a big affect on my family.
3.Why am I excited to actually do this project for the next 3-4 weeks?
I'm excited to work on this for the next few weeks because it'll give me the chance to work on something that I feel would be useful for the students to learn and I feel like they can learn a lot from it.
4.In Academic Seminar, you’ll get help in actually planning out your project, but for now, type your brainstorm of what you’ll need to accomplish in order to finish your project in the next 3-4 weeks.
I need to make sure that I everything planned out properly meaning that I have enough copies of each scenario for day 1 and day 2, that research about diabetes is provided for the students especially those who may not know as much about the topic, and exercises and food nutrition that will also be provided.

1.What did you do at your WLE today?
Today me and my mentor discussed whether or not I was still thinking about doing the recycling project with the students at my workplace and I decided to think about other projects that I might think about doing instead. My mentor gave me three different books about projects and the one that I chose to do my project one was focused on science and about diabetes, it caught my attention because my dad has diabetes and I feel like I know enough about it to teach the students about it.
2.  What did you and your mentor talk about regarding your project?
My mentor and I discussed whether or not I wanted to still do my project on recycling and we decided that it would be better not to because we'd have to make sure the staff would be willing to commit to abide by it and because she feels like it would take a lot of work to do so on making it school wide. I decided to do my project on a different subject and when I told my mentor about it she thought that it was a great idea and thought that it would teach the students something that students at their grade level should be learning and that it could teach them better eating habits. 3.What have you accomplished on your project so far?
So far I've been able to complete my plan on what I want to do.

Statement of Purpose

I chose to do my project on diabetes because it’s had a very big affect on people in my family including my dad and I feel that a lot of people especially kids aren’t aware of what can cause it and ways in which they can prevent it from happening. I hope that by doing this project with the students that it will bring awareness that if they don’t make better eating habits now that it could have an effect on them and their health and that by eating healthy it can make them healthier.
Description
My project is based on a girl who has diabetes who was caught fainting on the street by witnesses and the project gives two different scenarios for day 1 and 2. What I’m going to have the students do is if possible go onto the internet and research possible reasons to what might be causing her to faint. Afterward they are to read the scenario for day 1 and by using critical thinking answer the questions. Afterwards I’ll reveal that what caused Mya’s fainting has to do with diabetes and in case certain students might not know what that is I’ll go over it with them and hand out a packet describing type 1 and type 2 diabetes and go over what insulin is and why it’s important that diabetics carry blood sugar kits with them etc. Then I’ll go over healthy eating habits and exercises that can help prevent them from getting not just diabetes in the future but all types of health issues due to lack of exercise and bad eating choices. I will start working on the project with the students on Tuesday November 15, 2011 once the kids get out of school and sign into Y.E.P and go into their groups. I’ll be working on it with them every Tuesday until internships are over. It’ll happen in the Y.E.P room (room A) once students get into their groups after they sign in the kids that don’t have any homework will be the students that I’ll be teaching the lesson to.

Project’s Impact

Depth:
In my opinion my project is pretty profound, it’s at their grade level so it shouldn’t be hard for them and it seems like a real interesting subject. I’d like to see that it makes an impact on them and that it'll motivate them to make better decisions for their health.
Breadth:
My project involves a small group of 8-10 students and possibly their parents as well, my mentor has mentioned before that she wants me to make the project assessable to parents too so that they are aware of what their children are learning.
Longevity:
My project will last from Tuesday November 15, 2011- Tuesday December 13, 2011. My project’s more like a life lesson so the students are capable of using this information as long as they’d like to.

1. What leadership skill(s) am I using the most? (Think Critically, Complete Projects Effectively, Collaborate Productively, or Communicate Powerfully?)

2. How well am I using the leadership skill at my WLE? How could I improve?

3. How does this leadership help me do my work?

4. What Leadership skill does my mentor use the most? Why?

1. What have I learned about myself (what I can do, what I like) because of this WLE experience?
I’ve learned that I can promote a topic to a group of students with confidence and that I can be patient enough to work with younger students.
2. What challenges did I face during my WLE and how did I overcome, address, or learn from them?
A challenge that I faced was advocating with my mentor.
3. What passions, values, or life lessons did I learn from this experience?
I learned more about nutrition and also how to substitute ingredients so that your meals are healthier.
4. How was my creativity put to use during my experience?
I was able to use my creative talents when we worked on projects and marketed for clubs.
5. What do I believe now that I didn't before about this profession?

6. What specific skills did I learn or practice during my WLE that are important in this profession?
A skill that I learned during my WLE was patience, this is important to this profession because in order to work at a school you need patience to work with the kids, you can't let everything frustrate you.
7. If someone were to ask me why what I did at my WLE was important, what would I say?
What I did at my WLE was important because it helped me learn how to interact with different age groups that I wasn't familiar to working with before hand.
8. How will what I have learned from my WLE affect the choices I make in the future?
By learning how to work with different age groups it taught me that I shouldn't work with younger children because although I had enough patience to work with them while I was there on Tuesdays, I wouldn't have enough patience to work with students that young everyday.

1. Remember way back when you were looking for your WLE?  In order to find my WLE and get hired, I had to…
In order to find my WLE I had to make a cover letter and resume. I also had to communicate with my mentor before hand.
2. The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is by…
Being professional and showing your future boss/mentor that you’re a hard worker and by showing them through your actions why you would make a good employee.
3. As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means…
Knowing how to act while you’re in a professional environment.
